Tempest

I just got Tempest, the next novel in the latest Star Wars trilogy. I though I'd record some of my reactions to it as I go.

Great to hear of the return of the shoto. When I read Luke decided to break it out again, I couldn't believe it. He still had it after all these years? And it has never been used again? But where did he keep it? It must not have been on Yavin IV when the Vong invaded or he would have lost it. Hmm... I don't yet know if it will be used in a duel in this book, but it's highly likely.
The family sparring match. I loved that. That Luke could defeat his son without igniting his lightsaber - sweet! And then, not even moving his feet? Awesome!
Aurra Sing! Shit, I didn't recognise her at first. The nickname "Nashtah" was cool as I was familiar with it from working on the Tunroth article, but was unaware of its connection to her. The line that gave it away, though, was the bit about enjoying killing Jedi! Still hasn't been confirmed yet, but I'm sure it will be her.
Reading Nek Bwua'tu discuss the triange between Corellia, Bothawui and Nal Hutta with Jaina Solo made me dig out my laminated galaxy map from the Fact Files to ckeck what he was talking about. Sure enough, there was the triangle.

In the aftermath of the Yuuzhan Vong War, Kyle Katarn went searching for clues about the Sith.
He has yet to return.

In response, Jan Ors and Jedi Master Mara Jade Skywalker have put together a crack team of heroes consisting of Alpha Blue agents and Jedi Knights to find Kyle. Eventually heading out into the region called the Cloak of the Sith, the heroes find Kyle held captive by the cyborg Jedi Daye Azur-Jamin, who has been twisted to the Dark Side by an evil Force-user. The heroes must free Kyle and attempt to turn Azur-Jamin back to the light.

Whether they succeed or are instead forced to kill him, the cyborg reveals information that is truly shocking: There is a dangerous Force-strong Yuuzhan Vong loose in the galaxy, and judging from her powers, it is clear that she has a master . . .

Kam Solusar leaned back and relaxed in his chair. Sipping his steaming hot chocolate, he late out a sigh of pleasure. Across from the heavy-set Jedi Master sat Luke Skywalker, cradling his cup with equal care.

“So what are your thoughts on this class, then?” Luke began.

A couple of times a year they tried to come together and assess the Academy students, trying to maximize the experience for them. They probably did not do it enough but Luke was always so busy and often away from the Academy.

“They are an exceptional group, this one,” was Kam’s thoughtful reply.

He had been with Luke right from the beginning, even before Luke had started this academy. Luke had begun to train a first group of trainees back when the clone Emperor had resurfaced. Three of that group had died then, Jem and Rayf; Ysanna youths, and Empatajoyos Brand; the cyborg King who had sacrificed his life to put an end to the Emperor’s spirit. The deaths had hit Luke hard and had postponed the starting of the praxeum for some time. Now, Kam, with his wife Tionne, did much of the day-to-day running of the Academy, with the help of Streen, another of the early-trained Jedi.

“Of course, with your niece and nephew, there was always going to be some very powerful Force users.” Kam continued. “However, the rest of the class is quite exceptional too. Those with weaker Force ability, like Tekli or perhaps Druffin, have real strength of character. Tekli has great potential as a healer, Druu tells me. We should really try to apprentice her to Cilghal if possible. Her confidence has progressed by leaps and bounds also.”

Luke took a sip before answering, savoring the warmth it imparted. “I’ve discussed it with Cilghal. She seems quite open to the idea. And it is often the case that those with less raw Force potential sometimes make the better Jedi. They take their abilities less for granted. I don’t need to tell you, but Tionne is the prime example! This academy could not function without her, and her research has been vital for the ongoing formation of us all.”

Kam smiled. He certainly wasn’t going to take his wife for granted! She would normally be here contributing to the discussion, but was away on another of her trips, this time to Chalcedon, consulting the Indexers on some Jedi legend.

“Her trips provide good experience to the students too. She took Eryl on the last one. That girl also has a unique gift, certainly. Using only the Force she is able to tell her location anywhere in the galaxy. Tionne tested it out – extremely accurate. Perhaps matching her to a pilot could be the best?”

Graduation for this class was drawing near. That was the reason for all the speculation on Master – Apprentice pairings. To further their potential, these students needed one-on-one tuition. Luke had already decided to take on Jacen, and Anakin – who would also be graduating, along with some of his class. The rest of the young Jedi Knights had yet to be assigned to fully-fledged Knights.

“The Force manifests itself in strange ways, that is for sure,” Luke mused. “I hear some of the other students also have some unusual abilities.”

“Ulaha has an exceptional mathematical ability, part of her Bith heritage no doubt. We have been giving her extra tactical training with some of the ex-military Jedi – Kenth in particular.”

“Good.” Luke had been working to establish strong links with the New Republic military. Recently, Kenth Hamner had been appointed as the Jedi liaison; his background in the navy made him the perfect man for the job. Other Jedi had also maintained their links and even formal positions such as Corran Horn, and Keyan Farlander. The Anx, Madurrin had also been working with them lately. On a couple of occasions now, the Jedi had worked in close concert with the navy. One such mission was fast becoming legendary, that of Jaden Korr and Wedge Antillies. The two of them, one on foot and one in an X-Wing had neutralized an entire Imperial installation. Admittedly, they were both exceptional, but it had made a lasting impression on some in the military.

“A budding diplomat in this group too?”

Kam smiled, “I presume you are referring to Sskta? He certainly has the personality for it. He is great with languages. His family’s trade background gave him that, and he is able to tap into the Force to augment his skill, too. He has been great help working with some of the students that cannot speak Basic. He adopts them all as friends and learns their language. A diplomat? Perhaps. He did take a great interest in your sister when she came and spoke about her work in politics last year. He still has a bit to work on though. The few tussles over trade rivalry between him and Raynar have settled down too, since they fought against the Second Imperium attack together.”

“I’ve been thinking I might team him up with Tresk,” Luke suggested. The Bothan had worked with the diplomatic corps before becoming a Jedi and had recently volunteered to take on a trainee.

“I like that!” agreed Kam as he reached for a piece of uj-cake to go with his hot chocolate. “Have you anyone in mind for Lowie or the avians?” he asked. The class had three avian trainees that Kenth was referring to. They tended to stick together even though they were not all the same race.

“I’ve actually been considering sending Chitter to an old friend of mine, Rorworr.”

Kenth raised an eyebrow at the unfamiliar name.

“He’s not a Jedi, which I know is unusual. Rorworr is a freelance Wookiee scout in the Outer Rim. He used to work with the Alliance and I like to support him when I can. He’s maintained that freedom fighter role out there and many a world has a story of him fighting tyranny and oppression. An impressionable Jedi like Chitter would learn a lot from him.”

Kenth pondered the idea for a while. It was a novel one, for sure, but Chitter did already have a solid foundation in the Force. His character needed some development and a non-Jedi could achieve that equally as well as a Jedi. The idea was so original it had never occurred to Kam before, but now he could see the possibilities in some of his own contacts. All the Jedi brought outside contacts with them. They were utilised to make the Jedi as effective as possible. This was just another way of maximizing their potential.

“You wouldn’t send Lowie to him?”

“No, I think it’s good for Lowie to have more interaction with non-Wookiees. He will always have strong connections to Kashyyyk but coming here has really broadened his mind. It’s been good for him. Having said that, I’m still no closer to finding him a Master.”

“What about Jaden Korr?” suggested Kam. “Kyle was back recently and, among other things, we discussed Jaden. Kyle is surprised he hasn’t taken an apprentice on already! He’s got the skill and the power for Lowie to aspire to, and has developed the maturity to offset and Wookiee rashness still in Lowie. Tionne and I both think it has potential…”

“Jaden…Jaden. Yes, I can see that working. You’ll propose it to him?”

Kam nodded. “Dal Konur has also approached me about taking on Jovan Drark, the Rodian. He wants to put him through some of the SpecForce trooper routines and especially develop his marksmanship which is already exceptional.”

Dal Konur was an interesting case. Having trained with the Rebellion SpecForce troopers he had a very aggressive approach to tackling problems. This had come a flashpoint when he abandoned his training to hunt down Imperial moffs. Luke had managed to arrange his retrieval before he’d carried out his plan and Dal had changed significantly over the years. He was still very assertive in his approach though, one of a growing number of Jedi favoring pro-active stances in the galaxy. Luke was concerned about this movement and so weary of placing the already physical Rodian Jovan with someone who would be likely to encourage this.

“I’m not sure about that one” was all Luke said. Kam knew most of what went through his mind anyway, and shared his concerns. “What students have we got left?”

“Well, we’ve yet to assign Raynar, Druffin, Tenal Ka, Klin-Fa, the other two Cha’a, a couple of the avians. Jaina?”

“Mara is keen to take her on but we will leave that one open at the moment.”

“Beyond that, we still have a way to go. Still, the future is looking bright. We are heading up towards 100 Jedi Knights now. There has been relative peace for a while. I’d say the Order is looking comfortable. Comfortable enough for us to have a break at least…”

Luke agreed. The future was indeed looking bright. The Jedi were growing in numbers and experience. The galaxy was at peace. It seemed that the Order at last was in a stable position. He smiled…

I thought I'd post a list of some of the projects I am working on:

The Order of Jedi Knights database.
- This is complete and contains all the Jedi associated with Luke's post-RotJ Order.
- It contains entries for name, gender, species, homeworld, rank, status, lightsaber, sources, and info on three classes; original 12, Darksaber 30, and Vector Prime 100.
- Currently the database contains 148 Jedi entries, sorted in order of training; although this can be sorted according to any of the above categories.
- It also contains a stats page giving percentages of male/female (57/43), human/alien (43/57), different ranks etc.
- It also contains a page on Jedi Possibles and John Does, which I try to identify.

Timeline.
- This contains a brief rundown of publications for reference purposes.
- It also contains known birthdays and years of death.
-A major component of this is the Jedi Missions page. This is an attempt to create an exhaustive list and timeline of all missions that the Jedi Order undertakes. Currently it contains many smaller obscure entries, as opposed to many of the more widely known mission in various novels. I have divided the Academy timeline in sections: Research, Beginnings, Expansion, Consolidation, Trials, and Revival.
- Accompaning the Missions page is a Planets page. This lists all planets that Luke's Order have had contact with in some way, shape or form. It is a way of measuring the impact and exposure the Jedi have had on the galaxy at large.
- There is also a column for Kyle Katarn with an outline of all his travels.

Junior Jedi Knights.
- The main purpose of this is to determine the 20 students that make up the Junior Jedi Academy.
- Only three are specifically identified: Anakin, Tahiri and Chitter.
- A number are described;
"There were aliens of all different colours - red, green, purple. Some had bodies like birds, others looked like snakes, and some had 8 or 10 arms and several eyes."
From this I'm able to make educated guesses as to the species of the 20.
- It also contains a breakdown of the events of these books and a possible timeframe.
- There is also a collection of facts about the running of the Academy which are most enlightening.
- This is not yet complete, and as I cannot get Kenobi's Blade here, may never will be.

Young Jedi Knights.
- This serves much the same purpose for this series as the entry above.
- Here though, there are "dozens of students", which I have conservately fixed at 2 dozen.
- Again, some are identified; Jacen, Jaina, Raynar, Tenal Ka; and some are only described: "Right now she smelled the musty body odours of alien Jedi candidates - mated fur, sunbaked scales, sweet-sour pheromones."
- Again there is a breakdown of events, and curious facts.
- This too is not yet complete but is on its way.

Yearbook.
- This is based on a combination of the above research and presents a visual depicition of the various classes; the name, number and photo of each student; along with poictures of the Academy instructors.
- This has been done for the Original Class, the Darksaber 30, the Junior Jedi Academy 20, and the Young Jedi Knight 24.
- I may post this later on.

Holocrons of the New Order of Jedi Knights

Bodo Baas - Krevaaki
Leia Organa stole this Holocron from the Clone Emperor. It was used by the Jedi Order until the Sith spirit of Exar Kun destroyed it. Other gatekeepers included the Krevaaki Jedi Master Vodo-Siosk Baas.

Sith Holocron
Kaerobani, an ambitious pirate leader, stole this from the New Republic storage facility on Coruscant during the reign of the Clone Emperor. Jedi Knight Mara Jade retrieved it from Kaerobani before he figured out how to use it.
MOTS - a bit confused by this whole bit, not having played the game.

Arca Jeth – Arkanian
This Holocron was uncovered on Arkania during excavations into important Old Republic Jedi sites. It was given to Jedi Knight Tionne when she visited there a couple of years after the refounding of the Jedi Order.
EGtAS. The dating is conjecture although it needs to be before JK:JA.

Asli Krimsan
Jedi Knight Tionne and Jedi Master Ikrit found this Holocron in Bast Castle on Vjun while training members of the Junior Jedi Academy. The magician Orloc stole it from them, taking it to Exis Station but it was recovered later.

Qalsneek the Bull of Dellat
This beautiful sea-crystal Holocron was found in Derem City on Kamino amidst other tomes of Jedi Lore and other artefacts. A map found in the tomb of Jedi Master Gar Anstak on Ossus led to its discovery during the Yevetha Uprising.
GatOR. The dating is conjecture as is the outcome, but I prefer to see the Academy win.

Sith Holocron
Eban Kinahay found this Holocron on a derelict ship near Ziost and stored it on Centrepoint Station. Not long after the Correllian Insurrection the Jedi Knights retrieved this Holocron, first having to fight against Eban’s son, Zyne Kinahay – a Dark Side adept - and his band of thugs.
CCW. The outcome was left open but I prefer to see the Academy win.

Sintas

Few beings know what the infamous bounty hunter Boba Fett looks like under his battle-scarred Mandalorian Armor; fewer can claim to know the secrets of the man's past, or what emotions beat in his heart (assuming he actually has one; current odds in Cloud City are 2:1 he doesn't). The female bounty-hunter Sintas may be the only one alive know knows for sure.

She knows as much about the man as any wife knows about her husband, for in addition to being comrades-in-arms for a while long ago, they were wed and had a child. As with all things surrounding Fett, this is a closely-guarded secret, and he will go to any length to keep it that way.

Fett has worked alone almost exclusively since the two split. While their parting presumably was not amicable, Fett continues to be somewhat protective of Sintas, albeit in a detached fashion. A feared hunter in her own right, she rarely needs anyone's help to stand on her own. Nevertheless, she works less frequently now, usually only accepting jobs of interest or importance to her. It seems the thrill of the hunt only brings back painful memories of "Bo."

Sintas is a strikingly beautiful human in her mid 30's. A native of Kiffu, Sintas wears the symbolic facial markings of her people, which in her case are three straight lines on the lower half of each cheek. Her long black hair is tied at the back, and she generally wears practical and unassuming clothes. However, while she might appear innocuous enough, the two heavy blasters hanging from quick-draw holsters betray her deadly trade.

Chapter One.

In a stone common room, four students gathered around a holo table. They were an unusual mix; a Talz, a Chadra-Fan, a Cha’a, and an Orgon; two furred aliens - white and brown - one reptilian alien, and one plantlike alien; two males and two females. On the table in front of them holographic monsters hovered over the round table waiting for their next instructions.

“What do you reckon, Druffin?” Sskta the Cha’a, asked his Talz partner. Their pieces were only just outnumbered, but the arrangement left them at a distinct disadvantage.

“Brnnr qi it seeash,” proboscis quivering, Druffin squeaked his reply in Talzzi. “Et sheed dnar.”

“Yeah, it’s not looking good, alright,” confirmed Sskta, “but we can’t let the girls beat us again.”

Across from them, Tekli, the Chadra-Fan smiled at her Orgon partner. “I think we’ve got them on the run, Chorash.” Chorash raised one of her eight tendrils in reply. It was a familiar situation for the four Jedi trainees; they often played dejarik in the two hours of free time before dinner. Tekli and Chorash had a greater grasp of the intricacies of the game, while Druffin and Sskta used straightforward techniques. As such, the girls generally won, but no one kept count; rather it was a chance to relax after intense Jedi training.

Searching desperately for a way out from sure defeat, Sskta seized his chance as a tall mound of ginger fur strolled past the rounded doorway.

“Lowie! Lowie, come here!” he called in his gravelly voice, “I’ve got a problem for you to solve!” Sskta smiled as the black streaked head peeked back around the corner. “You’re good at dejarik; help us get out of this trap!”

“Loffrrrr,” Lowbacca chuckled at the Cha’a’s insistency. Tekli and Chorash exchanged glances, and then shrugged.

“Sure, if you think it will help!” squeaked Tekli with a competitive shine in her grey eyes. Lowbacca drew up a seat and began to study the board. While they waited, Druffin made a sudden exclamation, his white fur bristling in excitement.

“Oh yeah, we forgot to tell you guys: we saw Master Katarn arrive while we were sparring earlier!” translated Sskta, sharing his friend’s excitement.

“Yeah, loads of Jedi have been returning to Yavin for when the Shadow Academy attack. It’s a good thing you were able to warn us about the attack Lowie, or else we would have been caught completely unawares!”

Lowbacca looked up from the board, his eyes dark as he faced Tekli. It was two days since he and three other Jedi trainees had returned from his home world, where they helped to repel an attack by the Second Imperium. Lowie and his friends had confronted a number of Dark Jedi; defeating two, while the third - an old friend of Jaina Solo - had warned her of an impending attack on Yavin IV. He had intended to scare her away but the young Jedi were not quitters and had returned to the academy with the warning. In the last few days, numerous Jedi Knights had returned to Yavin to aid the students in repelling the impending attack. Students watched the arrivals with interest, amidst their own preparations. These older Jedi were the role models and idols of the Jedi trainees. In a year or two, the trainees would be apprenticed to some of those Knights, to continue their training. Some Jedi in particular were being watched carefully. Many trainees had their favourites; secretly hoping these Jedi might choose them to be their next apprentice!

Lowie murmured quietly. The four days he had spent on Kashyyyk with his family had been a wonderful reunion, especially with his sister’s eventual success in gaining her siren fibers; but now his return to Yavin had continued the separation from his family. Still, he knew his place was here with his friends; defending the Academy and the Order he had pledged his life to. In an attempt to escape his thoughts of home, he turned attention back to his friends, inquiring about their fascination with Master Katarn.

“Wrrghrh nnrggh huurnnn Gaarrnanta?”

“You haven’t heard the story of Druffin’s recruitment to the Academy?” exclaimed Sskta in surprise. Druffin hooted in mirth; sometimes he wondered if Sskta was more excited by the story than he himself was. He gave his permission for Sskta to inform Lowie. Sometimes it was nice to hear the story from someone else.

“Well you remember what they taught us about the last attack on Yavin, 10 years ago? When the fallen Jedi Desann led an attack force of Empire Reborn troopers?

“It was just before those events. The NRI asked Master Katarn - he wasn’t working as a Jedi then - to investigate a Remnant base on Druffin’s home world of Alzoc III. He got in, got out; confirming the Imp presence.”

Lowie whuffed quietly. From the rumors he’d heard, Master Katarn never just “got in and got out”, at least not without leaving a trail of the bad guys in his wake.

“It was a little later that Kyle returned with a group of Spec Force troopers to eliminate the base,” continued Sskta. “They joined up with some Talz freedom fighters who acted as local support. Druffin’s Mom and Dad were part of that group, and his uncle Muftak led it! They ‘eliminated’ the base once, teaching those damn Imps who is boss, and handed the base over to the local Talz resistance. It was in the aftermath of the battle that Master Katarn made the connection with Druffin. How old were you again?”

“Echoo wruu”

“Yeah, that’s right. Two years old, and at a celebration afterwards, Druffin, you were playing with a stormtrooper helmet – bloodthirsty, isn’t he?” Sskta joked. The young trainees all laughed in their own way. “He was playing with this helmet and used the Force to draw it to him. Kyle saw him and checked it out with his parents. So halfway through last year Kyle returned to Alzoc, picked up Druffin and brought him here. So you see we’ve got a strong connection with Katarn!” beamed Sskta proudly.

Lowie made an appropriate noise showing he was suitably impressed. Both Tekli and Chorash had heard the story many times from their friends but they too made impressed exclamations. It was evident by the way both Sskta and Druffin spoke of Master Katarn, that if they had anything to do with it, they be his apprentices soon.

“Well, would you look at the time!” said Tekli, feigning a look at her wrist-chrono to stop the boys being carried away again. “It’s almost dinner time. Anyone know what’s being served?” she asked hungrily.

“Apparently its Mugruebe stew - Master Farlander’s favourite. He arrived this morning and must have requested it,” replied Sskta, always with an answer at the ready.

“Well we can finish this game later,” said Tekli. “Let’s not miss dinner, but you’re not getting off with a draw,” she taunted playfully. In agreement, the five young Jedi left their game behind, the dejarik monsters still frozen in place…

...talk about information overload. The first parts of the Dark Forces articles are up at WotC. Part 1, Part 2 and a minis scenario.

There are just SO many little connections and links in these articles, I am lost. Will take quite some time to sift through them. I don't like the style as much as the Droids article though, but I guess it is dictated by its medium.

Also not sure about the adventure seed of Katarn, and Daye Azur-Jamin going bad, and the Yuuzhan Vong Jedi. Almost a bit much - too fanboyish.

Sadly my idea about the Moldy Crow was shot down (literally) too. Never mind.

Notes

1. The dating is 57 years after the Great Resynchronisation, or 23 years after the Battle of Yavin. This story takes place immediately before, and during, the events of Jedi Under Siege - the sixth book in the Young Jedi Knights series.

2. The Talz student is from Heirs of the Force, page 63.

3. So far Tekli has only been in the NJO, but she fits a description from Heirs of the Force, page 15; “Right now she smelled the musty body odours of alien Jedi candidates - matted fur, sun baked scales, sweet-sour pheromones."

4. The Cha’a is from Heirs of the Force, page 59. It also fits the above description, smelling of “sun baked scales”.

5. The Orgon fits the description in The Golden Globe, page 12, where it describes trainees: “some had bodies like birds, others looked like snakes, and some had 8 or 10 arms and several eyes."

6. Talzzi is one name for the native language of the Talz. The other is simply Talz. The Talz species is unable to speak Basic due to their proboscis, but are able to understand it.

7. The “two hours of free time before dinner” is from The Golden Globe, page 52.

8. “Loffrrrr” translates roughly as clever or wily.

9. Here, Lowbacca calls Kyle Katarn “Gaarrnanta”, which roughly translates as “fearless leader”.

10. The connection between Desaan and his Reborn Jedi, and Hethrir and his Empire Reborn was made recently in the Wizards: Dark Force article at http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=starwars/article/sw20050616a.

Dark Forces

At the moment I am waiting for a Dark Forces article that is coming out from Wizards of the Coast. Written by Abel Pena, it covers Kyle Katarn from Dark Forces, through Jedi Knight I and II, Jedi Academy, his NJO work and beyond! Abel's been teasing us with some info over at theforce.net. I'm curious about the Erling Tredway reference that is supposed to be in it.

Abel also brought us the Mandolorian article which gave such info as the daughter of Boba Fett (awesome I know) and that it was her in the YJK series. He also wrote the Droids and the Force article available on Hyperspace. From there we have the Iron Knights, and Tash and Zak Arradna as Jedi Knights. Go Abel.

I'll post a link when the article is up.
